list.in.to.chicago this week: 02.02.2015

Forgot to mention I was going on vacation for a bit. Sorry about that. Also might not be publishing next week due to business travel.

Pick of the week
There is a waiting list for both sold out Steve Earle shows (Tuesday and Wednesday at City Winery), and then Wednesday is strong with Tributosaurus as Lionel Richie and the Commodores (Martyrs'), Nicholas Barron (Lincoln Hall) and Ben Howard at the Riv if you can scrounge tickets. Friday has a really solid entry with a pair of longtime Chicago veterans in Split Single and Gerald Dowd (SPACE, Evanston).

list.in.to.COZ
Regular office hours on Tuesday at Vaughan's, and the "Year of Diver" marches on with the Andrew/Coz duo at Fado on Saturday night.

Recap
Well, we saw a salsa band in Old San Juan on the Puerto Rico trip. That should count for something. Other than that, I'm going through sun and rum withdrawal.

2.03   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
We've been getting a steady stream of new folks for a while now. The cold and snow may establish which of them are serious about playing a few songs in front of a bunch of strangers.

Steve Earle with Dawn Landes (City Winery)   SOLD OUT!
The second half of a four-night solo stand from the elder statesman of American blues, country, folk and rock. He's such a journeyman that he showed up on at least three different episodes of Sonic Highways

2.04   wednesday
Ben Howard with Willy Mason (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
One of my favorite new discoveries of the last couple of years, with a pretty solid new record out in 2014. It's basically singer/songwriter rock, but with a strong tendency for the arrangements to build on themselves and just get really big and climactic.

Nicholas Barron (Lincoln Hall)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
This is a CD release party for the longtime soul-blues-funk songwriter. Not sure if the esteemed Dr. Gillis is on drums, but it's such a big deal that Nicholas created TWO different Facebook events for it, invited me to both of them, AND sent me a message about it.

Tributosaurus (Martyrs')   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Just when you think they've run out of quality artists to cover, they come back with Lionel Richie and the Commodores.

Steve Earle with Dawn Landes (City Winery)   SOLD OUT!
See Tuesday's listing.

2.05   thursday
Marilyn Manson with Hide (Riviera Theatre)
I've seen some blurbs about Manson's return, either as a reinvention or reintroduction, or something like that, but I never really got past his shock value enough to really care. Musically, Nine Inch Nails scratched that itch for me just fine.

Evan Dando with Sara Johnston (City Winery)
He's been performing under his own name for a good long time now, but I don't think I've heard any of his solo material. He's still "Evan Dando from the Lemonheads" in my mind.

2.06   friday
Split Single with Gerald Dowd, Paul Kalil (SPACE, Evanston)
The Lincoln Hall show from Jason Narducy's new band was a little bit ragged on account of the Chicago music scene veteran having just gotten back from touring with Bob Mould. Here he'll be joined on the bill by another fixture on the local scene in Gerald Dowd, who recently released his first solo record in that marathon event out at FitzGerald's.

Chris Robinson Brotherhood (Park West)
Galactic with Monophonics (Concord Music Hall)
First, a tough night for the jam band kids, unless they've found those special mushrooms that let you be in two places at once. Second, any guesses as to what Robinson might have thought upon hearing that his ex-wife (Kate Hudson) has broken up with another rock star (Matt Bellamy from Muse)?

Tributosaurus (Wire, Berwyn)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Reprising Lionel Richie from earlier in the week.

2.08   saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)   SEE COZ LIVE!
It's pretty funny that we're getting a repeat of one of the alternate Diver configurations (Andrew on acoustic and me on the cocktail kit) before we've actually played one of the "Year of Diver" shows as Actual!Diver.

Billy Idol with Broncho (Riviera Theatre)
The best snarl of the 80s and the best thing to ever happen to James Marsters' acting career released a new record last year that was supposed to be somewhat modern, but I wasn't really that curious to hear if he pulled it off.

2.09   sunday
Fletcher Rockwell (Wire, Berwyn)
I think we played with these guys once. Which is another way of saying there isn't much to choose from.
