list.in.to.chicago this week: 06.22.2015

Last week's list was rained out.

Pick of the week
I like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at that Soldier Field event on Saturday, or Young The Giant and Neon Trees at the World's Largest Parking Lot Party down at UIC. If you wait until day of show, you can probably get good U2 tickets (Wednesday, Friday & Sunday at United Center) for a song. That's been pre-loaded on your iPhone.

Just Vaughan's on Tuesday, which I'm late for.

Recap
Robert Plant got postponed, but we ended up making a game-time decision to see Rush two Fridays ago. It was a fun show, with the band moving backwards chronologically from Clockwork Angels to Signals in the first set, Moving Pictures to 2112 in the second, and then an encore that took them from Caress of Steel to their debut album. In typical nerdy fashion, Neil Peart even switched to a replica of his 70s/80s drum kit at the start of the second set. Lots of fun, lots of adolescent memories.

6.23   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
Songs and stuff. You should come.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (Promontory)
Had a cabbie that was playing Fela Kuti a few weeks ago, and I think I surprised him by talking about Femi and Seun, neither of whom I've had the chance to see live.

Bad Religion with Plague Vendor (Metro)
Second night of a two-night stand from the veteran punk act, whose frontman is a university professor now, and totally looks like one.

Chastity Belt with American Wrestlers, Kyle Kaos (Empty Bottle)
This is an XRT "new sounds" show, or something like that, and they've got good ears. Also, I think it's a kid-friendly show, if I remember something I heard on the radio correctly.

6.24   wednesday
U2 (United Center)
This week's newsletter came pre-loaded with this listing.

Chuck Leavell, Bernard Fowler & Tim Ries with Wes John Cichosz (Martyrs')
The Rolling Stones aren't playing in Indianapolis until the 4th of July, but they must be traveling through the area this week, since we're getting the traditional Stones sidemen gig at Martyrs'.

Secret Colours with Jon Lindsay (Empty Bottle)
This psychedelic rock band was tagged as a next big thing a while back, but don't seem to have lived up to that expectation quite yet.

6.25   thursday
Griswolds with Urban Cone (Lincoln Hall)   SOLD OUT!
This is an apparently popular band from Australia, and not a tie-in to the new Vacation movie that's coming out this summer.

6.26   friday
Beach Boys with Kool & The Gang (Montrose Beach)
Probably won't be quite as big as the Mumford show last week, but anything is going to seem like a piece of cake, logistically, after that one. You could go see Love & Mercy first to brush up on your Beach Boys history, but then you'd miss Kool & The Gang.

Third Eye Blind with Dashboard Confessional (FirstMerit Bank Pavilion)
First off, Diver has played "Jumper" about half a dozen times now without me having the slightest idea how it goes. Second, it looks like the Northerly Island time machine is only going back about ten or fifteen years right now. Must need a tune-up.

U2 (United Center)
See Wednesday's listing.

6.27   saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
I'll be in lovely Williamsburg, VA visiting family, so the sure-handed Chris Peterson will be behind the kit this week.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah with Suffers, JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound (Soldier Field)
This band had one of the underrated albums of 2014, and will be headlining something called "Woofstock."

Bobby Bare Jr. with Freakwater (Goose Island Beer Co)
I picked the wrong weekend to go out of town, not so much for the bands at this event, but the event itself, which features Doug Sohn of Hot Doug's fame. And Goose Island beer.

Heartless Bastards with Filligar, Craig Finn, Kickback (Elston Avenue Sausage & Music Fest)
Another new (?) street festival with a strong music lineup, including Chicago street fest veterans Heartless Bastards, and Craig Finn from The Hold Steady. Between St. Louis & Grace.

Young the Giant with Neon Trees, 7th Heaven (UIC Festival Lot)
The Old St. Pat's World's Largest Block Party has moved to a new location, not quite so central to the city. Better headliners than I've seen in a while, though.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin with Ratboy, The Inbetween Days (Subterranean)
They may be playing smaller venues, but someone still loves Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. I've probably made that joke already.

"Weird Al" Yankovic (Chicago Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
Just when you think he can't possibly still be relevant, Weird Al goes viral with a boatload of YouTube videos and some really excellent parodies.

Ty Segall with Corey Hanson, Richard Vain (Empty Bottle)   SOLD OUT!
Given that most of Ty Segall's output strikes me as being more about the sonics and the attitude than the actual songs, I think the only context I'd be interested in hearing from him is solo acoustic, which is what this set will be.

6.28   sunday
Dr. John & the Nite Trippers (City Winery)
They just announced two dates in September on what must be the return leg of this tour, but if you can't wait that long, it doesn't look like it's sold out.

Esperanza Spalding (Lincoln Hall)
Billed as "Emily's D+Evolution," which sounds like it's going to be a modern jazz/hip-hop concept record.

Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes with Keithen Terrell Banks (House of Blues)
The other 70s bar band from New Jersey has had just as much longevity as those E Street kids.

Bare Mutants with Lawrence Peters Outfit (Goose Island Beer Co)
Day 2 of the Dog Dayz festival.

U2 (United Center)
See Wednesday's listing.
