A while back, I stopped trying to generalize what kinds of music I liked and didn't like. While I will take educated guesses as to whether or not something will fit into my aesthetic, it's typically a much more visceral gut reaction than that. The common elements aren't necessarily all that obvious, and figuring it out is where the fun lies for me, and ultimately, what the point is of this part of the site.

With Friends Like These

Jim DeRogatis posts some "friendly feedback" on his review of The Who at the Super Bowl. If I didn't know any better, I'd guess that DeRo offers up these sorts of incendiary opinions deliberately to provoke this sort of response.

Scratch Tracks

On the one hand, I'd really, really like Peter Gabriel to get back to making Peter Gabriel albums. After "curating" last year's Big Blue Ball, the former Genesis frontman is now getting ready to release an album of covers, done as orchestral arrangements.

There's always a twist with Gabriel, though, and here it's the combination of his album Scratch My Back and the eventual companion piece, I'll Scratch Yours. It seems the artists he's tackling on this record will be returning the favor. I'm definitely looking forward to Elbow, David Bowie and Radiohead playing Peter's music. If I were to guess, I'd say Elbow goes with something like "Love To Be Loved," Bowie takes the obvious "Games Without Frontiers," and Radiohead does something deliberately weird, like "Fourteen Black Paintings" or "We Do What We're Told (milgram's 37)".

Up On The Upside

Soundgarden is reuniting, which means a heartfelt "thank you" to everyone who didn't buy or wrote bad reviews of Chris Cornell's execrable last solo album.

Indefatigable Chicago DJ James Van Osdol thinks they ran out of steam at the end of their primary stint, but as I commented over there, I think Down On The Upside actually got better with age. I find myself going back to that record at least as often as I do Superunknown and Badmotorfinger, although Superunknown still holds the honor of being a Desert Island Disc for me.

I figure the summer destination festivals are almost a foregone conclusion, and based on some insider information about another headliner, that means I may have to make the trek to Austin City Limits this year.
