list.in.to.chicago this week: 01.12.2015

I know that the Tomorrow Never Knows festival starts...tomorrow. Did I just blow your mind? Couldn't have done that if I published on time, now could I?

Pick of the week
So if there are still tickets for The Both (Wednesday at the Athenaeum Theatre), that'll be good. And as of right now, there are still tickets for Buddy Guy at Legends on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

list.in.to.COZ
Vaughan's on Tuesday, Fado with Diver on Saturday. Repeat as necessary.

Recap
The duo Diver show went really well, although if anyone has any tips for tuning and/or miking a cocktail kit to get a better bass drum thump, please let me know.

1.13   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
I sorta want to try an acoutic arrangement of "Team" from Lorde, after hearing it the other day. "Happy Idiot" from TV on the Radio is also worming its way into my brain. Probably not for this week, though.

The Tragically Hip with Brendan Canning (House of Blues)
I'm not saying music in Canada works differently, but the first single from the 2012 album from "The Hip" debuted on Hockey Night in Canada.

1.14   wednesday
The Both (Athenaeum Theatre)
The adorable between-song banter between Aimee Mann and Ted Leo might work a bit better in the more intimate Athenaeum than it did at Metro, where I sorta wanted them to get on with playing songs.

The Tragically Hip with Brendan Canning (House of Blues)
See Tuesday's listing.

1.15   thursday
Protomartyr with Spider Bags, Varsity, Turn To Crime (Lincoln Hall)
I keep noticing this band because they have a very, well, noticeable name. Something about it makes me think pterodactyl, which makes almost no sense at all, except maybe for the physical shape of the word. Musically? No clue. #nothelpful

Buddy Guy with Planetary Blues (Buddy Guy's Legends)
A friend sent me pictures from one of the shows last week, and once again, I don't understand why I don't go see Chicago's blues ambassador every freakin' year when he does this, let alone every once in a while.

1.16   friday
Pup with Ne-Hi, Team Spirit, Meat Wave (Schubas)   SOLD OUT!
The Reader preview of this Tomorrow Never Knows show cites Saturday band-of-the-moment Alvvays as a kindred sound, but basically says these guys are not as good but have a lot of energy. And Alvvays isn't all that good, which puts us back in this place where modern "rock" music seems to be defined more by velocity than by music. #getoffmylawn

Cloud Nothings with Bully, Oozing Wound (Metro)
That being said, there's a post-emo sub-movement in something that's probably punk rock where I sorta get the frantic noise thing, but I just don't particularly care for it. And that's where I'm at with Cloud Nothings. Don't get me started on Japandroids. Part of Tomorrow Never Knows.

Buddy Guy with Mike Wheeler (Buddy Guy's Legends)
See Thursday's listing.

1.17   saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)   SEE COZ LIVE!
It's week three of the Year of Diver, and this time we'll be welcoming back our good friend Brian Cohen into the bass player role. So, yeah, three weeks, and three different lineups, but so far, I'm pretty optimistic that most of it will sound/feel like the same band.

Alvvays with Sun Club, Santah, Carbon Tigers (Schubas)
So the funny story here is that I had queued this band's album up with a bunch of other ones I hadn't quite gotten to last year, including Lana Del Ray. Now, I was bracing myself for Del Ray, expecting something warmed over and hard to listen to. When I had that response to a handful of tracks, imagine my surprise when I checked the playlist and found it wasn't her, but a band that seemed to have credible critical support behind them. Too much reverb on poorly sung, jangly indie pop.

Save the Clocktower with Moon, Blind Spt (Martyrs')   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Maybe I don't follow enough local bands on social media, but I maintain that I'm really impressed with what Jimmy has cultivated on Twitter and Facebook for a band that I will continue to call chillwave until someone tells me I'm wrong.

Jukebox the Ghost with Twin Forks, Secret Someones (Metro)
Playing as part of Tomorrow the Never Knows festival. Seriously, I think it's time for a new band name trend. As long as we don't go back to deer and bears.

Bonerama (SPACE, Evanston)
Heh heh. Heh heh heh heh. Heh. Boner.

Buddy Guy with John Primer (Buddy Guy's Legends)   SOLD OUT!
See Thursday's listing.

1.18   sunday
Buddy Guy with Joe Moss (Buddy Guy's Legends)
See Thursday's listing.
