list.in.to.chicago this week: 12.08.2014

The 70s return, along with modern keyboard jazz and some blues heavyweights. And more Wilco.

Pick of the week
If I don't say Bob Seger (and J. Geils!) at United Center on Thursday, I may be sleeping on the couch. Everyone seems hip to a bunch of the other good ones this week, as Wilco, Justin Townes Earle, Trombone Shorty and The Head and the Heart are all sold out. You've still got Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood at the Vic on Saturday, which should appeal to jazz and jam band fans, with maybe a little bit of funk for good measure.

Once again, just regular office hours at Vaughan's on Tuesday, unless you live in a condo building in the Loop.

Recap
Didn't see any music last week. Did see Big Hero 6, and that was really, really good.

12.09   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
When I got to Vaughan's last week, the musicians outnumbered the regular bar patrons by, like, ten to one. It was weird, but it balanced out a bit more as the evening went on. Probably won't learn any other seasonal tunes save for the one everyone looks forward to anyway. #stinkstankstunk

Skinny Puppy with Front Line Assembly, VNV Nation (The Vic)
My roommate at the summer program at Berklee College of Music was way into this early industrial band, which our R.A. described as guys chasing after weird noises with samplers and computers. Which was still a pretty new thing back then in...well, it was a long time ago.

Wilco with Nicholas Tremulis & Rick Rizzo (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
The Winterlude continues to the critical acclaim that accompanies most Wilco/Jeff Tweedy efforts in Chicago. Lots of fanboys and fangirls in the local music media world, for better or worse.

Yusuf/Cat Stevens (Chicago Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
So, the Reader had this listed simply as Cat Stevens, but the Chicago Theatre page has it as Yusuf/Cat Stevens, which also seems to be how his Facebook page is named. I have to imagine that billing for this tour is highly problematic, as promoters will likely want as little reference to Yusuf Islam as possible. I would also imagine that the former Steven Demetre Georgiou probably isn't going to play the deep South.

12.10   wednesday
Justin Townes Earle with Nora O'Connor (SPACE, Evanston)   SOLD OUT!
Not entirely sure if Steve Earle's kid is considered alt-country, Americana, or just plain ol' country at this point. But it's really good stuff.

12.11   thursday
Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band with the J. Geils Band (United Center)
I would call Seger a guilty pleasure of my better half, except she's not really that guilty about it. There will be a lot of denim at this one, I reckon. Also, Freeze Frame from J. Geils was one of the only albums I acquired on cassette back in the day. I was more of a vinyl guy.

Wilco with Marrow (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
See Tuesday's listing, and Monday's if I had gotten this thing done on time.

12.12   friday
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue with The Soul Rebels Brass Band (The Vic)   SOLD OUT!
One thing I learned from Dave Grohl's Sonic Highways series was that Trombone Shorty got his name because he would play with bands on the street in New Orleans when he was much, much shorter than his trombone.

Dolly Varden with Funeral Bonsai Wedding (SPACE, Evanston)
The longtime Chicago indie-rock band has slowly been getting back at it in the last year or so.

Edgar Winter (Buddy Guy's Legends)
The blues/rock singer and multi-instrumentalist can still be heard with some regularity on WLUP with "Free Ride," and as far as I know, he hasn't let up since his first record in 1970. His recorded output has slowed somewhat in the last decade, and a lot of that has been live albums.

Gooey with Weber Band, Dexter (Double Door)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
When I last checked, my friend (and mortgage broker) was playing drums with Gooey. And we played a ton of shows with Weber Band back in the earlier days of Andrew Fraker & Sons.

Nashville Pussy with Valient Thorr, Against the Grain, Werewolves at Hour 30 (Reggie's Rock Club)
File this one under "bands I didn't know were still bands."

Wilco with Jim Campilongo Trio (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
See Tuesday's listing.

12.13   saturday
The Head and the Heart with Phox (Aragon Ballroom)   SOLD OUT!
It's been over a year since their last Sub Pop record came out, so this Seattle folk-rock band is kicking it old-school with a long tour. Apparently their fans have a longer attention span than I might have given them credit for.

Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood (The Vic)
The jazz/funk organ trio and the venerable jazz guitarist may be taking a page from The Bad Plus on their latest release, with a few interpretations of classic rock tunes mixed in for good measure.

Eric Gales with Cash Box Kings (Buddy Guy's Legends)
A long time ago, guitarist Gales was heralded as the next Jimi Hendrix, but shockingly, the hype from guitar magazines seemed to be a bit overblown.

12.14   sunday
The Bad Plus (City Winery)
Funnily enough, I wrote the bit for Saturday's Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood show before I saw that these guys were playing this week. Also, they seem to have moved on from rock tunes and into classical, with their version of Stravinsky coming out in the past year.
