list.in.to.chicago this week: 12.01.2014

The holiday shows are really kicking in.

Pick of the week
This is your third or fourth chance to see St. Vincent (Tuesday at the Chicago Theatre) this year and on this tour. Tickets are said to be available at the door. If you can find tickets, Wilco (Friday and Saturday at the Riv) and Nick Lowe (Saturday and Sunday at the Old Town School) should be really good.

Tuesday night at Vaughan's for more Grinchitude.

Recap
Slightly tempted to break up the long weekend with some music, but the opportunity did not present itself.

12.02   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
We probably won't have as big a crowd as during the short week last week, but that means more beer for us.

St. Vincent with Future Islands (Chicago Theatre)
Now we're into the full swing of XRT holiday shows. The self-titled St. Vincent record has been picking up some high-profile end-of-year honors already, and rightfully so.

12.03   wednesday
Counting Crows with Jake Bugg (Chicago Theatre)
Another XRT holiday show with the 90s stalwarts.

Bush (Cubby Bear)
Okay, so apparently Wednesday includes some sort of time warp back tot he 90s. I haven't read the Onion A.V. Club's annual list of "least essential albums," but I would not be surprised to see the new Bush record there.

Tributosaurus (Martyrs')   FRIENDS OF COZ!
As Jimi Hendrix.

12.04   thursday
Paolo Nutini (Reggie's Rock Club)
Not content with just the big Chicago Theatre shows, XRT is having a release party for their latest Live from the Archives CD with Nutini. Showtime is at 5pm, which makes me think there may be a live broadcast component.

12.05   friday
Wilco with Split Single (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
This is the beginning of the Chicago band's "Winterlude" residency. Keep an eye on the Jam Productions and Riviera Theatre Twitter feeds in case more tickets are released.

Styx (The Venue, Hammond, IN)
To their credit, Styx didn't replace an estranged frontman with a young guy from a tribute band. Larry Gowan, who has been filling the Dennis DeYoung role in the band since 1999, is a Canadian artist who has been around almost as long as the Chicago band has. I even have one of his records, which I think I bought because Tony Levin plays bass on it.

Cracker (Old Town School of Folk Music)
So, that wormhole to the 90s from Wednesday is still in effect.

AM Taxi (Subterranean)
The offshoot of Lucky Boys Confusion hasn't completely superseded that band, but plays an awful lot more nowadays.

12.06   saturday
Sam Smith with Fitz and the Tantrums, Mary Lambert (Chicago Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
This one is the 101.9FM holiday show. I didn't realize Fitz and the Tantrums was a triple-threat, getting airplay on 101.9FM, XRT and Q101. Headliner Smith only covers two of those, I think.

Nick Lowe with Los Straitjackets, Ian MacLagan (Old Town School of Folk Music)
Two nights from the genteel Englishman, featuring his impeccable songwriting and some supremely mellifluous banter.

Mutts with Archie Powell & the Exports, the Kickback, Pop Goes the Evil (Metro)
This is the holiday party for local website Gapers Block. Longtime readers will recall that I had a former co-worker tell me about Mutts three or four years ago, but I still haven't actually checked them out yet.

Slayer with Suicidal Tendencies, Exodus (The Venue, Hammond, IN)
Really, really curious to see what kind of crowd these metal and hardcore bands attract in Northern Indiana. Suicidal Tendencies had one of the biggest mosh pits I've seen in years when then played Riot Fest two summers ago. Not sure how that will translate in this environment.

Walk the Moon with Meg Myers, Kongos, Vance Joy (Aragon Ballroom)
Never heard of this Cincinnati band, but I'm intrigued by Kongos in a support role. Either the recent headlining tour was too much too soon, or they're finding ways to stay on the road without burning out their audience, or this is a one-off holiday gig.

Ballrogg (Constellation)
Experimental jazz. Cool name.

Wilco with Sam Amidon (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
See Friday's listing.

12.07   sunday
Jackyl (Joe's)
There are, admittedly, some nineties metal bands that you expect to keep at it well past their expiration date. This is not one of them.

Nick Lowe with Los Straitjackets, Ian MacLagan (Old Town School of Folk Music)
See Saturday's listing.
