Pick of the week
This week gives you a rare chance to see bands you should have seen twenty years ago, but didn't. Me'Shell Ndegeocello at Thalia Hall on Wednesday should be really good, and then you have the chance to see Fishbone (Friday and Saturday at Martyrs') and Living Colour (Saturday at Park West) back-to-back, which is kinda awesome.

list.in.to.COZ
Regular office hours on Tuesday at Vaughan's, and then Diver is at Fado on Saturday.

Recap
So, the quick and dirty (muddy?) Riot Fest recap. On the one hand, how many festivals give you Slayer, Wu-Tang Clan and Patti Smith all on one 3-day pass? On the other hand, the logistics of the expanded site in Humboldt Park went from merely convenient to outright dangerous, as the crowd packing in to see Weezer caused serious problems for anyone trying to exit the adjacent stage after Primus (with Danny Carey on drums) finished.

Also, Flaming Lips blew out the power during their first song, but were able to make up the time when The National experienced "traffic issues" and didn't make their headlining set on time.

9.16   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
Don't let us have all the fun without you. Because we totally will.

Spoon with EMA (Chicago Theatre)
The new album is a pretty good mix of what we've come to expect from Spoon plus some new sonic territory. I did not count how many times they use maracas, though. Britt Daniel clearly loves maracas. And while it didn't hit me like her debut record, the latest from EMA did sound pretty good, so make sure you get there on time.

Bell X1 with Gabriel Kahane (Lincoln Hall)
I think the last time through from this Irish band was at Schubas, so they're moving up in the world again.

9.17   wednesday
Me'Shell Ndegeocello with Fredericks Brown (Thalia Hall)
It's been many, many years since I had listened to the bassist and songwriter, and her latest album sits in a really cool, mature place. It's a bit hard to describe, although there are certainly elements of modern neo-soul in there.

9.18   thursday
The Fixx with New Canyons (Mayne Stage)
This is a WXRT Saturday Morning Flashback show, and I think the band may be taking requests over the Internet. You should vote for "Deeper and Deeper," if only because everyone is going to vote for "One Thing Leads To Another," as if they wouldn't play that one otherwise.

J. Roddy Walston & The Business with Pujol, Early Sound (Metro)
Southern, piano-driven rock that's said to be a really good live show.

Rhett Miller with Dylan Bratt (City Winery)
Miller is usually good for at least one solo show and one Old 97s show per year.

Shonen Knife with Habibi, Blizzard Babies (Bottom Lounge)
The Japanese all-girl punk band is still at it, thirty-plus years later. Naoko Yamano is the only original member, with the other two joining in 2006 and 2010.

9.19   friday
Fishbone with Run and Punch, Downtown Brown (Martyrs')
The Reader blurb for this show quotes a 1987 preview for the band, describing them as "6 black L.A. teenagers." I last saw them at Riot Fest a few years ago, and was pleasantly surprised at how good they sounded after many years and lineup changes.

Matt Ulery (Green Mill)
The new record from local jazz bassist and composer Ulery has gotten the attention of the local media in a few fall roundups so far, and these two shows celebrate the release of that record.

Miles Nielsen & the Rusted Hearts (FitzGerald's, Berwyn)
If you were at Riot Fest on Sunday, you could end up seeing three Nielsens in less than a week!

Black Lips with The King Khan & BBQ Show, Heavy Times (Logan Square Auditorium)
Sort of a mini-tour of hipster neighborhoods from the Atlanta garage rock quarter and the Quebec duo.

9.20   saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)   SEE COZ LIVE!
Remind us to start the "home stretch" a little sooner, so when the late-arriving crowd asks for more songs, we don't get dirty looks from the Fado staff as they try to close the upstairs bar on time.

Living Colour with Unlocking The Truth (Park West)
A much bigger room for Living Colour than that Evanston show I went to, but the bigger story here may be Unlocking The Truth, which is the trio of hard-rocking black teenagers who set up and played in Times Square over the summer and got lots of press for doing so.

Kongos with Young Rising Sons (Metro)   SOLD OUT!
The breakthrough single from this South African band seems to be everywhere these days. The album is pretty heavily produced, which begs the question of whether it's a glossy overcoat on traditional South African instrumentation, or if all those textures were added later to make it sound more "exotic."

Cymbals Eat Guitars with Varsity, Pink Frost (Schubas)
The new record seems to cover a lot of ground, with some more psychedelic textures and some more straight-up post-punk attack.

The Breeders with Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Cayucas (Goose Island Urban Block Party)
One more street festival to go, and then I think we're really done. The reunited Breeders have gotten generally good marks recently, I think.

Fishbone with Velcro Lewis Group, The UnGnomes (Martyrs')
See Friday's listing.

Black Lips with The King Khan & BBQ Show, NE-HI (Thalia Hall)
See Friday's listing, but in Pilsen.

Matt Ulery (Green Mill)
See Friday's listing.

9.21   sunday
Brian Ferry with Dawn Landes (Chicago Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
Still one of the smoothest and most well-dressed frontmen in rock history, if not the smoothest and most well-dressed.
