When the lineup was announced, I was really concerned that Riot Fest had gotten too big for Humboldt Park, but it turns out they've moved it to a bigger parcel of the park, on the other side of Division St. I'm really, really curious to see how well it scales up.

Pick of the week
The Saturday lineup for Riot Fest is pretty stacked, and I think single-day tickets are still available. If paying for a festival isn't your thing, there are few standouts from the World Music Festival at Pritzker Pavilion on Thursday and Saturday in Vieux Farka Toure and Seun Kuti, and all the shows for that festival are free. Then you've got Danny Carey on drums for Primus on Saturday night at Concord Music Hall, and finally, for something completely different, the Robert Glasper Trio at the Jazz Showcase Thursday through Sunday.

Nothing on the books this week, but Diver is back at Fado a week from Saturday.

Recap
Nothing to report last week, except for a somewhat late-arriving Fado crowd for Diver, proving once again that you can't let a slow start throw you on that gig.

9.09   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Might just be Tony holding down the fort this week, so keep him company!

Yawn with Raw McCartney (Empty Bottle)
For better or worse, all I can remember about this band is that they played with a band called Yuck at some point, and now I can't remember which is which.

9.10   wednesday   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Tributosaurus with Anderson-Chute-Easley (Martyrs')
As Paul Simon this month, which means drummer Dan Leali gets to have an awful lot of fun again, playing all of Steve Gadd's parts. I hate Dan sometimes.

MTVghosts with Ancient River, Crown Larks (Burlington)
I wanted to start an 80s cover band and call it "The Ghost of Martha Quinn" at one point. This reminded me of that.

9.11   thursday
Robert Glasper Trio (Jazz Showcase)
One of the pre-eminent young jazz pianists out there right now, and with a trio at the Showcase, the repertoire will likely be a bit more traditional than his Robert Glasper Experiment records.

Vieux Farka Toure with Bombino (Pritzker Pavilion)
Part of the World Music Festival, and free to boot!

Rise Against with Lawrence Arms (Aragon Ballroom)
So, Riot Fest is doing that thing I always make fun of Lollapalooza for, which is calling club shows "after shows" when they happen before the festival actually starts. This is one of the bigger ones.

9.12   friday
Riot Fest (Humboldt Park)
Day one is mostly about the metal, with the Rebel stage featuring Gwar, Clutch, Mastodon and Slayer. Other headliners include Jane's Addiction, which is still weird given Perry's "other" festival, and The Offspring.

Tomorrow the Moon with Two Carolines, El Gato Roboto (Burlington)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Some quality local space-rock, if that's what you're in the mood to hear.

Metronomy with Dawn Golden (Lincoln Hall)
Looks like the return leg for the English band, after playing Metro earlier in the year. The electro-pop is a little too lightweight for my taste.

The Hold Steady with Death & Memphis (Cobra Lounge)   SOLD OUT!
I have been told that the band hasn't been quite as compelling since their original keyboardist left. I cannot confirm or deny this.

Hood Smoke with Fall Classic (Hideout)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
I've only seen the band when they covered Synchronicity from The Police back on Halloween, but the vibe strikes me as similar to funk bands like Bumpus, but with a higher degree of complexity.

Robert Glasper Trio (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

9.13   saturday
Riot Fest (Humboldt Park)
Lots of good bands, and lots of schedule conflicts on the second day, with The National, Metric, Paul Weller, Afghan Whigs, Wu-Tang Clan, Flaming Lips and Television all on th bill.

Primus (Concord Music Hall)   SOLD OUT!
If you want to avoid deciding between Les Claypool and Robert Smith on Sunday, you can catch an aftershow from the San Francisco weirdos, who will feature Danny Carey from Tool on drums while Tim "Herb" Alexander recovers from open-heart surgery.

Maceo Parker (The Promontory)
The restaurant didn't come off so well in recent reviews, but now the music space at the new Hyde Park spot is open.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 with Aurelio (Pritzker Pavilion)
Another (free!) World Music Festival show with some serious family heritage.

Shabazz Palaces (Lincoln Hall)
This "experimental" hip-hop collective from former Digable Planet Ishmael Butler definitely caught some attention a year or two ago when they played Pitchfork.

Zac Brown Band with Cheap Trick (Wrigley Field)
Rockford's favorite sons make the most of their weekend by opening up at Wrigley before playing Riot Fest on Sunday.

Robert Glasper Trio (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

9.14   sunday
Riot Fest (Humboldt Park)
The big finale is The Cure, and it's likely that they'll play Disintegration as the last of the yet-to-be-announced full album treatment to go along with the nine others being featured. Also, Weezer, Primus, Mudhoney, The Hold Steady, Cheap Trick and Superchunk. And bumper cars.

Naked Raygun with Mudhoney (Double Door)
The local punk luminaries are pinch-hitting for Thurston Moore, who had to cancel.

Television (Bottom Lounge)
I actually saw Tom Verlaine when I was in college, back when I didn't have the slightest idea who Television was.

Califone with S. Carey (Lincoln Hall)
Some day, I'll give this band a shot, but I really didn't like Red Red Meat, so that's been a big hurdle to overcome given limited bandwidth and resources.

Robert Glasper Trio (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.
