list.in.to.chicago this week: 03.24.2014

Coming to you live from foggy San Francisco this week, where it's raining, so don't be too jealous of the non-Chicago weather.

Pick of the week
It's a really good week at Metro, with Real Estate on Thursday, Warpaint on Friday (if you can find tickets) and Gary Numan on Saturday.

Nothing this week. Next Diver gig is April 5th.

Recap
Saturday night at Metro was a blast. The level of enthusiasm for some of the new Andrew Fraker & Sons material was really gratifying, and maybe even a bit surprising. So thanks to those of you who made it. Now I just need to learn to pace myself a bit better, as I felt like I played a bit too hard in the first half of the set.

3.25   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
I'll be out of town, but I suspect many of the regulars will be there.

3.26   wednesday
Future Islands (Lincoln Hall)
Synth-pop from Baltimore, not to be confused with The Lonely Island, which is the comedy band from Saturday Night Live featuring Andy Samberg.

Scott Stapp with Like a Storm, Romantic Rebel (House of Blues)
Didn't Stapp fall down drunk on the side of the stage at a Creed show in the Chicagoland area once? I would figure that we wouldn't allow him back after that.

3.27   thursday
Real Estate with Pure X (Metro)
There are one or two people in my Twitter feed who are really excited about this band. I want to say the vibe I got from the new record reminded me of slowcore bands like Low, but with a bit more of a modern, indie-rock twist.

Rhett Miller with Nora O'Connor, Scott Ligon (City Winery)
I still consider Old 97s to be primarily Rhett Miller, so I'm not really knowledgeable enough to differentiate between that band and him solo. Unless he's actually playing alone, in which case it makes more sense.

Kraftwerk (Riviera Theatre)
Und now we dahnce. The German electronic band has been at it for 44 years. Which is not that old. Really.

3.28   friday
Warpaint with Cate Le Bon (Metro)   SOLD OUT!
One of several things I didn't realize about this all-female quartet is that Flood produced their latest record. Miles Raymer of the Reader describes it as a cross between post-punk and bands like TV On The Radio, and that's a fairly reasonable assessment.

JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound with Lowdown Brass Band (Cubby Bear)
The local R&B outfit is a favorite of XRT, who are sponsoring this show as part of their Opening Day-related festivities.

3.29   saturday
Gary Numan with Big Black Delta, Roman Remains (Metro)
Only listened to last year's new record from the new wave icon once or twice, but generally liked what I heard. He sat in with Trent Reznor on some Nine Inch Nails gigs a few years ago, which may have helped introduce him to a somewhat younger generation.

Ulele! with Esso!, Hobo Code (Martyrs')
Man, there's a name I haven't seen in a while. Presumably, this is still the world music outfit that was assembled by former Drovers percussionist Winston Damon, who I believe then started calling himself Ulele Stone.

Doug E. Fresh with Biz Markie, Slick Rick, Rob Base, Big Daddy Kane (Chicago Theatre)
Not sure how this more mainstream element of rap and hip-hop from the late 80s and early 90s has aged, but I guess we'll find out.

3.30   sunday
How to Dress Well with Forest Swords (Lincoln Hall)
Yep, I'm totally playing the "it's at Lincoln Hall, so it's probably good" card tonight.
