Greg Kot is reporting Kings Of Leon, Eminem, Skrillex and Arctic Monkeys as Lollapalooza headliners. Thank you, Greg Kot, for just saving me a couple hundred bucks. If Arctic Monkeys play, say, the Aragon as an aftershow, even better.

Pick of the week
So, if you see ONE show this week, I would ask that it's Andrew Fraker & Sons on Saturday at Metro. Five bands for six bucks (if you buy in advance) is a deal! Plus, we're like, really good and stuff!

The other most notable shows (Lorde at the Aragon on Tuesday and Young The Giant at the Riv) are both sold out, so you'll have to put a bit of effort in if you want to see those.

Saturday night's Andrew Fraker & Sons show at Metro starts promptly at 8pm, and we go on first. We also recommend buying tickets in advance from the Metro website, and using "SONS" as your promo code to get a discount. Plus regular office hours at Vaughan's on Tuesday.

Recap
The Experience Hendrix show on Friday night went back and forth between thoughtful explorations of Jimi's sound and style and how it intersected with that of the various performers, and then masturbatory soloing over chord changes and riffs. I enjoyed Eric Johnson, Eric Gales and the Los Lobos on the former, and endured Zakk Wylde and Kenny Wayne Shepherd (and his incredibly stiff, charisma-less singer) on the latter. One of Wylde's guitars may not actually have been stolen after the show -- it may have been trying to escape.

As for Saturday night's St. Paddy's festivities with Diver, the crowd at Fado was pretty well-behaved. Not sure if that's because we expect them to be really, really bad, or if the folks at Fado have gotten crowd control down to a science. They also got really excited over "Zombie" from The Cranberries, and we were a few seconds away from finding out what two different Foo Fighters songs played simultaneously would sound like.

3.18   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
St. Patrick's Day is over! It's safe to come out now. Show us proof that you voted in today's primary election and we won't give you anything, but we'll nod approvingly at your dedication to democracy.

Ex Hex with Priests, Blizzard Babies (Schubas)
This is a new band from Mary Timony, seen most recently with Wild Flag.

Lorde (Aragon Ballroom)   SOLD OUT!
On the one hand, I like her songs a lot. "Royals" is so much better than 90% of what gets called pop music right now. That said, the sparse, minimalist arrangements get a bit redundant for me when I try to listen to the whole record. That also means a lot of focus on the (allegedly) young singer in a live show, but I've seen some good reviews so far.

3.19   wednesday
Childish Gambino (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
I don't know that Donald Glover left Community specifically to focus on his musical career, but it's certainly the immediate benficiary. When you consider just how demented that TV show can be, they dealt with his departure really nicely.

Molly Ringwald Quintet (City Winery)
Yes, that Molly Ringwald. I believe the actress is singing jazz tunes, which would severely limit the opportunities to do any Breakfast Club-style dancing.

3.20   thursday
Cameron McGill with Young Male Spinsters, Chris Coleslaw (Hideout)
If you only see one local singer/songwriter who hails originally from Champaign, IL this week...well, come see Andrew Fraker & Sons on Saturday. Cameron will undoubtedly have a lot more gigs than we do.

3.21   friday
J. Davis Trio (Double Door)
I'm still curious to see if/how this band has changed their sound since returning to action. It was very much borne out of that acid jazz era in Chicago, and while some of that is coming back (see Liquid Soul and Booty Movement Coalition), it's not the same scene anymore.

3.22   saturday
Andrew Fraker & Sons with Zaramela, Train Company, Eagle Trace and Art of Cool (Metro)   SEE COZ LIVE!
We'll be focusing almost exclusively on songs we've written since we released This Fragile Truce back whenever the hell we released that. Longtime readers know that this band does not play live all that often, so you don't want to miss it. Also, it appears the keyboard is working again.

Young The Giant with Vance Joy (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
Really liking the new record from these guys, but Q101 isn't helping when they play them right after Cage The Elephant. Strikes me as a cross between maybe Maximo Park and latter-period Incubus. A proper rock band, which is refreshing.

Art Garfunkel (Park West)
So, if you went to the Paul Simon & Sting show a few weeks ago, you could go to this and say you saw Simon & (then) Garfunkel this year. Which would confuse people, but whatever.

Led Zeppelin 2 (House of Blues)
I had wondered what happened to former Busker Soundcheck guitarist Paul Kamp, and finding him in a local Led Zeppelin tribute band really wasn't that much of a surprise in the end.

3.23   sunday
Jon Langford & Skull Orchard with Daniel Knox (Hideout)
The Leeds transplant is back from his annual trip to South By Southwest. He always seems to be playing somewhere in Austin during the festival, but I don't know if he's ever really part of the official proceedings.
