list.in.to.chicago this week: 03.02.2015

In which your humble correspondent wonders if this thing is just turning into "bands with careers that stretch back to when I was paying more attention."

Pick of the week
Between the alt-rock nostalgia and a rare local band sighting, I've got to go with the Juliana Hatfield Three with Frisbie at Lincoln Hall on Saturday, which is inexplicably not sold out.

list.in.to.COZ
Vaughan's on Tuesday, Fado on Saturday. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Recap
You would have thought that after Andrew and I had a particularly heavy meal on Saturday, the Diver set later than night might a bit slow-moving. But then someone requested Jimi Hendrix, Tony pretty much peeled the paint off the walls with his guitar playing, and we were off to the races.

3.03   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
This is probably as far as I can stretch the birthday celebrations, so come join us if you'd like to lift a glass for my being, to quote Pink Floyd, "shorter of breath, and one day closer to death." I may have a special song (not that one) for the occasion.

Marbin (Tonic Room)
One of the few bands to ever explicitly reach out to me to promote themselves, so despite having only seen about half a song as an opener for another jazz show, they've earned a regular shout-out.

3.04   wednesday
Tributosaurus (Martyrs')   FRIENDS OF COZ!
As Cream, which has the potential to be seriously good.

Meghan Trainor with Sheppard (House of Blues)
If you're wondering what this show will be all about, my guess is the bass.

The Lone Bellow with Odessa (Lincoln Hall)   SOLD OUT!
I think I've seen stuff written about this band, or I'm just assuming that since they've sold out Lincoln Hall, who has a hell of a track record with up-and-coming bands. Or I'm just conflating them with Adrian Belew's Lone Rhino album, which is a whole other thing.

Buckwheat Zydeco with Sanctified Grumblers (City Winery)
At this point, they're pretty much the only zydeco band with a national footprint that I can think of. Must be nice to totally own your niche.

Genome with Mos Scocious (Tonic Room)
Another young, local jazz band, and the DePaul bar seems to be a focal point for that kind of thing.

3.05   thursday
Cassandra Wilson (Thalia Hall)
The jazz singer will be paying tribute to Billie Holiday, which should be pretty sharp.

STS9 (House of Blues)
When this band put a stake in the ground halfway between jam bands and EDM, I figured that other bands might follow. But I still feel like they're the giant in that particular field, which may physically be a field on the grounds of the Bonnaroo festival.

Big C Jamboree with Rockin' Johnny Burgin Band (Martyrs')
This is going to bug me. I know Johnny Burgin, from way back, and I don't remember why. I think maybe college?

3.06   friday
The Church (Double Door)   SOLD OUT!
Speaking of college, we put on a show with The Church at the University of Chicago back in my freshman year, and the band was great live and had a lot more depth than just "Under The Milky Way." I also totally should have sold my Paiste cymbal pin to their tour manager for $25. I could have just bought another one the next time I was home in New Jersey. Don't know why I didn't.

Tweedy with Juan Waters (The Vic)
Pretty sure these are Jeff Tweedy's annual fundraising shows, which bounce back and forth between Wilco, his solo performances, and now his new band with his son Spencer.

North Mississippi Allstars with Anders Osborne (Thalia Hall)
There was a brief period where it seemed like this band was going to reinvent the modern blues, but while they've still got their distinctive take on it, blues music has remained mostly unaffected.

Shemikia Copeland (SPACE, Evanston)
I can't recall if the blues singer really broke through at Blues Fest or Taste of Chicago, but whichever it was, she's come a long way since then, having been annointed the new "Queen of the Blues" by the daughter of the late Koko Taylor back in 2011.

John Moulder (Green Mill)
Still one of the best local jazz guitarists on the scene.

Tributosaurus (Wire, Berwyn)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Reprising Wednesday's Cream set for the western suburban music fans.

STS9 (House of Blues)
See Thursday's listing.

3.07   saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)   SEE COZ LIVE!
We're in the middle of at least a four-week stretch of shows where everybody is present and accounted for, and if last week was any indication, the rust is officially shaken off.

Juliana Hatfield Three with Frisbie (Lincoln Hall)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
The sweetheart (which wasn't supposed to be a play on "Universal Heartbeat," but it may as well have been) of the early indie/alternative scene is reunited with her band, and HEY LOOK FRISBIE IS BACK TO OPEN THE SHOW!

Tossers with Kevin Flynn & the Avondale Ramblers, Continental (Metro)
It's that time of year when Irish or Irish-influenced bands play Chicago on their way to wherever they're playing on St. Paddy's Day.

Tweedy with The Minus 5 (The Vic)   SOLD OUT!
See Friday's listing, but this one is sold out.

Shemikia Copeland (The Promontory)
From Evanston to Hyde Park -- it's like she's doing a tour of our fine local academic institutions. And Northwestern. #dropsmic

STS9 (House of Blues)
See Thursday's listing.

3.08   sunday
Talib Kweli & Immortal Technique with Niko Is, CF, Hasan Salaam (Metro)
My hip-hop tastes always gravitate towards the more socially conscious and politically aware rappers, and it's probably a tossup between Talib Kweli and Common for the most emblematic of those qualities.

Robert Cray Band (House of Blues)
I could have said this about any number of artists playing this week, but I remember when Cray was the young upstart, and now he's a bit of an elder statesman of the blues. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm old.

Pentatonix (Chicago Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
We, as a nation, cannot resist a good a capella group. This one beat out the competition on The Sing-Off a few years ago, and apparently haven't looked back.
