Boo!

Pick of the week
Well, it would be Dry The River at Schubas on Thursday if there were any tickets available. There do seem to be tickets available for the first of two alt-J shows (Saturday and Sunday at the Riviera), so if you can deal with the venue, they're doing some neat, angular stuff.

Unless they give us some last-minute December gigs, Saturday is the penultimate 2014 performance for Diver at Fado, and then regular office hours at Vaughan's on Tuesday.

Recap
Looks like anyone who did the Twitter "contest" for Dum Dum Girls on Friday actually won tickets, but it was the band's fourth Chicago show this year, and Pitchfork may have inflated expectations that the late start couldn't follow through on. My biggest issue, I think, was that every single song seemed to be based off of the same small number of open guitar chords. So harmonically, there was very little to set anything apart, either in the music or in the vocal melodies. I would have killed for a barre chord or even just for a capo to move things around a bit. Lead singer had a nice shiny dress, though. Looked like a disco ball.

10.27   monday
Courtney Barnett with San Fermin, Mikhael Paskalev (Metro)
Caught some of her set online during Lollapalooza, and it was good. The Aussie brings a bit of a visceral punch to her songs that sets her apart from other female indie rock acts. And headlining Metro when you haven't yet released a full-length album is either impressive, or further proof that the "album" is a dead concept in our digital age.

Booty Movement Coalition with The WillfromBrazil Band (Martyrs')
The largely improvised funk band is back on their "last Monday of the month" schedule. Not sure who's involved with it these days.

10.28   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
In memory of the late Jack Bruce, I think we may have to go heavy on the Cream. And who would have figured that he'd go before Ginger Baker?

10.29   wednesday
Birds of Chicago with Black Lillies, Markus Leo (Lincoln Hall)
I saw that there was a pretty sizeable article in Friday's Chicago Tribune about this duo, which makes me suspect that they're friends with a writer at the Tribune.

10.30   thursday
Dry the River with Nathaniel Rateliff, Baby Money (Schubas)   SOLD OUT!
After randomly seeing the folky English rock band a few years ago in a half-empty Beat Kitchen, we were hoping they were still a well-kept secret and waited until last week to get tickets. At which point it was too late.

Slowdive with Low (The Vic)   SOLD OUT!
The English shoegazer band recently reunited after a 19-year break with most of their members intact.

The Flat Five (Hideout)
The band comprised of "the secret weapon" from several other bands has a Thursday night residency though mid-November.

John Abercrombie Quartet (Jazz Showcase)
One of the more notable jazz guitarists who came through the fusion era in the seventies, but his palette reaches beyond that and into post-bop and avant-garde forms.

10.31   friday
Rebel Rebel with AM Taxi, Noise FM, Blackbox, Hessler (Double Door)
It's the 18th Annual Halloween Bash, and a Brit-heavy one, with the local acts posing as David Bowie, The Kinks, The Police, Oasis and Guns N' Roses, respectively.

Mucca Pazza (Lincoln Hall)
No, they're not dressed up as a hipster marching band for Halloween. That's how they always look.

Marnie Stern with Feuding Fathers, Broughton's Rules, Space Blood (Subterranean)
A bit eclectic and weird, to the point where I think Stern may have helped set the stage for Tune-Yards to break through.

John Abercrombie Quartet (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

11.01   saturday
DIVER (Fado Irish Pub)
Only a few more shows left this year, so if you had "go see Diver live" as a New Year's resolution, you had better get on that.

alt-J with Lovelife (Riviera Theatre)
The Saturday show from the Mercury Prize winners is not sold out yet. I think. And once I noticed the drummer had no cymbals, it's almost all I can focus on when I listen to them.

Patti Smith (Symphony Center)
This is part of the Chicago Humanities Festival where Smith is accepting the Chicago Tribune Literary Award, so I don't know how much performance will be involved.

Adrian Belew Power Trio (Old Town School of Folk Music)
The longtime King Crimson frontman was not a part of the band's recent tour, electing to focus on his solo work. That solo work should make up the majority of the set, although I would expect a few Crimson tunes thrown in for good measure.

Kimbra with Empress Of (Lincoln Hall)
I've seen positive reviews of her solo work, but her collaboration with Gotye is still my primary context for the New Zealand singer.

John Abercrombie Quartet (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

11.02   sunday
alt-J with Lovelife (Riviera Theatre)   SOLD OUT!
See Saturday's listing.
