list.in.to.chicago this week: 04.21.2014

Hope you had a happy Record Store Day.

Pick of the week
So, Petty Fest (Wednesday at Metro) looks cool. Wallace Roney (Thursday through Sunday at the Jazz Showcase) is some solid post-bop jazz. If you've got a jazz-fusion itch, there's Classic Album Night at Reggie's on Thursday. And then We Are Scientists bring their energy, humor and big hooks Friday at Lincoln Hall.

Just regular office hours at Vaughan's this week. Diver is at Fado next Saturday.

Recap
Nothing to report last week, although I want to hear from Tony about that 5 Seconds of Summer show for different reasons.

4.21   monday
Neil Young (Chicago Theatre)
I'm assuming it's Young solo, since Crazy Horse isn't mentioned. Also, it's one of those "an evening with..." shows, which means no opening act. I've only managed to see the legendary singer/songwriter once before, which I should probably rectify at some point.

4.22   tuesday
Open Jam (Vaughan's)   COZ SINGS!
So, last week we were this close to trying to play the entire first Asia album on acoustic guitar and djembe.

Adam Busch with Manishevitz, Bevel (Hideout)
I saw Manishevitz at the Hideout Block Party many years ago, and it was pretty good indie pop. Apparently Adam Busch is the main guy behind that band, so he's either opening up for himself, or the Reader got the online listing wrong.

Neil Young (Chicago Theatre)
See Monday's listing. Somewhat surprised this isn't sold out.

4.23   wednesday
Petty Fest (Metro)
Alison Mosshart, Jakob Dylan, John Stirratt, Eric Pulido, Brendan Benson, and others (including Chicago's own Kelly Hogan, I think) perform the music of Tom Petty to benefit the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

The Knife (Aragon Ballroom)
Swedish electro-goth, if you're into that sort of thing. Margasak's preview in the Reader speaks to a lot of stylistic range for a duo.

Secret Colours with Mister Suit, Fred Thomas (Empty Bottle)
I know I'm probably judging them too harshly based on one single show that I saw, but I feel like there's an element of the local scene that will fawn over you as a psychedelic rock band as long as you set your reverb pedals the right way. Some of the textures were definitely present, but it just didn't add up for me.

The Mowgli's with Misterwives, Finish Ticket (Bottom Lounge)
I'm not saying the California "indie, gospel, folk, love-rock" band's Wikipedia entry was written entirely by serious fans, but it practically gives them credit for the Giants' World Series win after they started using their song "San Francisco."

4.24   thursday
Wallace Roney Quartet (Jazz Showcase)
The former Tony Williams sideman and Miles Davis protégé hasn't released a record in about two years, so it's hard to say who will be with the jazz trumpeter on this tour.

Classic Album Night (Reggie's Music Joint)   FRIENDS OF COZ!
Speaking of Tony Williams, this month's installment features Believe It from the New Tony Williams Lifetime, performed by The Xavier Breaker Coalition, and then The Inner Mounting Flame by The Mahavishnu Orchestra, performed by General Zod:

Aloe Blacc with Main Squeeze, Johnnyswim (The Vic)
So, this is the guy who sings on that Avicii song "Wake Me Up," and who was just announced as one of the acts playing Taste of Chicago.

4.25   friday
We Are Scientists with Paws (Lincoln Hall)
I think the Brooklyn band has since relocated to London (after leaving California for Brooklyn), and their last time through town, they sold out Schubas despite forcing you to download some third-party app to get tickets. They also have an advice column on their website, and have churned through a number of band members since I last saw them opening for Art Brut.

Bobby Bare Jr. with Cory Branan (Schubas)
Lydia Loveless with Dirt Simple (Schubas)   SOLD OUT!
A bit of an impromptu Bloodshot Records showcase between the early and late headliners.

Steve Tyrell with Mark Madsen (Mayne Stage)
Am I going to list a show just to make a Game of Thrones reference? Does Margaery Tyrell make bad choices with men?

Wallace Roney Quartet (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

4.26   saturday
Temples with Drowners (Lincoln Hall)   SOLD OUT!
The English psychedelic rock band is only two years old, but have already gotten the attention of the media on both sides of the pond.

Waxahatchee with All Dogs, Carbonleak (Empty Bottle)
On some level, being a female indie-folk artist from Brooklyn that does well enough to separate themselves and tour is an achievement in and of itself, as I'm guessing there are a lot of similar acts there. The name is memorable enough that I think I've heard something, and I think I liked it.

Boy George (House of Blues)
There's a lot of eighties music that maybe wasn't as bad as I remembered it, but Culture Club did not stand the test of time in my book. And this is coming from someone who did a total 180 on Duran Duran.

Wallace Roney Quartet (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

4.27   sunday
Eleventh Dream Day with Father Costume (Hideout)
This may be the last week of the Sunday night residency, so if you were putting it off, it might be time to act.

Wallace Roney Quartet (Jazz Showcase)
See Thursday's listing.

Lydia Loveless with Dirt Simple (Schubas)   SOLD OUT!
See Friday's listing.
