Okay, The Ataris' cover of Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer" was, I thought, kind of cool, particularly the substitution of a Black Flag sticker at the end. And while the Kid Rock/Nickelback version of "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" doesn't compare to Elton John's original, it's relatively innocuous.
True to form, though, the music business must think they have a hot new trend on which to jump with all the grace and delicacy of the proverbial bull in the proverbial china shop with this retro remake thing. I was lucky enough to be in the shower with the radio on, patently unable to change the station without electrocuting myself, which would have been an okay option, I guess, while our local modern rock station played a dreadfully awful new version of "Love On The Rocks" from Neil Diamond. That's right, you heard right. Neil Fucking Diamond. I couldn't tell who was behind this craptacular display, although my initial hunch was Marilyn Manson, since it's up his alley for being some bad approximation of ironic. A bit of research has suddenly forced me to lose all previous respect I had for Korn, who appear to be the guilty party.
And then, right after that abomination finished, said "modern rock" station played AC/DC. I've caught them playing the Aussie Hall of Famers three or four times recently, and I still can't figure that one out. It's not bad or anything, but given their predilection for ramming the latest "new rock" bands down our collective throats by way of our collective ears, it just seems odd.
Wait a bit and you'll hear an A Flock Of Seagulls cover. I heard it on our modern rock station a couple of days ago, though I don't remember now if it was "I Ran" or "Spaceage Love Song", though I think the former.
As to the Black Flag sticker, I'm glad that someone else noticed that [waves at various people]
