You Had Me, Then You Lost Me

Andrew Sullivan riffs on how the invasion of Iraq has affected the ownership of oil revenues in this country, but tries desperately to hang on to his innocence by wondering right at the end:

Was this a plot from the beginning? I doubt it. But it is an obvious game-plan now.

Why doubt it? Why would this not be a plot from the beginning, particularly from Cheney? The pre-war intel on WMD seems to have been pretty clearly dubious even at the time, so I'm sticking with the same "there had to be a reason" theme as in the previous post. Why not a nakedly imperialist land grab? Occam's Razor and all that.
