My first thought when I saw that soon-to-be-former Fire defender Gonzalo Segares would be signing with Apollon FC in Cyprus was "wow, he must have wanted to be anywhere but Chicago." I was all ready to bash the club for making it's young talent feel so unwanted that they'd split town for leagues no one had ever heard of.
Except I don't think that's really what's going on here. If they can't cut it in the big European leagues, some of the most common destinations for not-quite-top-shelf MLS or American players have been in Scandinavia. Until now. With Eddie Johnson and Freddy Adu both landing in Greece, I'm starting to wonder if there's starting to be some pushback among these players about those Nordic climates. This is purely a guess, but I would imagine that mid-level clubs in Greece, Denmark, Cyprus and Norway are probably pretty close in pay scale and level of play, so this could simply be some agents widening their horizons at the behest of players who don't like the cold.
So, for Segares, it might have truly been an "anywhere but here" scenario, except that may have had more to do with the Chicago weather than anything else.
It's just a theory, but three signings starts to look like a pattern.
