So far, if the Chicago Fire is trying to think outside of the box in their coaching search, that box clearly isn't Major League Soccer. So far they've been linked to former MLS players Chris Armas, Robin Fraser, Richie Williams, and now...Eric Wynalda?
That Sam got this scoop before, say, Ives or Goff strikes me as curious. Not totally outside of the realm of possibility, but I just don't see him having the contacts of those other guys. Then again, I could see Wynalda still holding a grudge against Ives for the events surrounding his exit from ESPN, so he might be trying to deliberately keep it off his radar.
As for the idea of Waldo as our new coach, I don't know what to think. My last experience with an outspoken broadcaster taking over a team I cared about was Phil Esposito with the New York Rangers back in the 80s, and that didn't really end well.
It would be a bold pick, thought, and probably the only one I've heard so far that has the potential to be materially better than Denis Hamlett, but I'll have more to say about that later.
Anyway, the calls on Fox Football Fone-In on Monday night could be interesting.
