I've heard a lot of rumblings about how the Fire -- and pretty much everyone else in MLS -- are trying to deconstruct the success of Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders. One thing that absolutely jumps out at me is that both of their stadiums are downtown, which matters in ways I discuss at the end of this post.
So if the Fire is truly serious about trying to steal some of those organizations' magic, owner Andrew Hauptman should open up his checkbook and buy the old Chicago Post Office when it goes up for auction on Thursday. Sorry, Bridgeview. I've enjoyed our time together, but this would be so much better.

Would this work? Okay, from a practical point of view, I actually have no idea. But if you look at these two pictures from Google Earth, both using the same map scale, I think the stadium footprint would fit in that space almost perfectly. And how freakin' cool would it be to drive under the stadium on the Eisenhower Expressway while there was a game going on? You want marketing? It doesn't get much better than that.
Come on Andrew, make it happen!
I thought they were getting ready to buy Toyota Park from Bridgeview. Unlikely they'd buy the Post Office as well.
Too bad they didn't put the Post Office up for sale in, say, 2004.
