Great Moments In Soccer Journalism

I know a lot of these stories end up being cut and pasted together, but you would think Grahame Jones might actually read what he writes before filing his story, just to make sure it's not utterly ridiculous:

There was no argument about it being a penalty kick, although Nagamura did protest loudly and received a yellow card for his trouble.

What was he protesting, then? The decision to uphold Prop 8 in California?

Jones also mistook Bakary Soumare for Wilman Conde, which I would say was a first, only he did it at least twice. And he both lamented that there must be "a better way to keep players in line" than yellow cards -- which existed pretty specifically to keep players in line -- and then complained about plays that did not draw cards.

Finally, there's this:

Patrick Nyarko's tying goal at 88:29 put paid to that idea, and when Chivas defender Mariano Trujillo shoved Brian McBride down in the penalty area, Blanco settled matters.

"Put paid"? Who actually says that? And "settled matters" is an awfully soft description of, you know, winning the game on what could easily be characterized as a dubious a penalty when you've been railing on the referee throughout your entire article. Why suddenly hold your tongue on the game-winning play? Maybe the midwest deadline to get the article in the Tribune snuck up on him.

Nice work on the late-night coverage for all of us early birds who rely on both our DVR and a good night's sleep. Thanks!
