It Ain't Over

NP: DEVO, Something For Everybody

I'm not buying the narrative that the Romney campaign is in free fall. They've had a rough couple of weeks, to be sure, but I find it very interesting that Obama has been outspending Romney on advertising lately.

Why so interesting? Because during the GOP primary, all of those crazy, see-sawing results in the early stages seemed to correspond pretty closely with who was dominating the airwaves at the local level. And with the likes of Sheldon Adelson, Tom Ricketts and the Koch Brothers still committed to the GOP, I don't think Obama has really faced the kind of ad attack that Citizens United has made possible.

I would love to see a breakout of polling that includes, say, either media spending or gross ratings points for political campaigns over the 7 days prior to the poll as a variable, just to see if I'm right. And I'm surprised Nate Silver hasn't looked at this yet.

Even with the big war chest going into the stretch, it may be that all that Super PAC money is going to be too little, too late, and the key strategic decision for Obama's re-election was specifically to spend all this money right around the convention, in order to create a sort of multiplier effect with the convention coverage.

All of which gets at the fact that I still have no idea how all of this shakes out. This election seems like uncharted territory in many, many ways.
