NP: Gomez, How We Operate
Okay, so I've biked to work a whopping three times this year. I'm not especially proud of this, but in my defense, I was getting ready to move, unpacking, preparing for Germany, going to Germany, coming back and still having unpacking to do from the move, and then it was a million degrees out.
Somewhere during this time, people got more self-absorbed and inconsiderate. On Tuesday, I had pedestrians walking into bike lanes like I wasn't there, cars suddenly changing directions with no warning and no signal with alarming frequency, and all sorts of other problems. Maybe it's because I haven't biked in a while, but I don't recall having this much noise to deal with in the past. Sure, there would be incidents, but usually not so many in a single trip. Again, people are either just getting dumber, or they're caring less and less about anything past their own noses. Or front bumpers.
It's almost enough to make me throw in the towel on the bicycle commuting, or at least scare me into remembering my helmet. Then, this morning, I lost a bolt on the rack from trying to adjust my bag once too often, and had to walk the last 3/4 of a mile. So it's going to take a little perseverance to get back into the swing of things here, and maybe an overhaul of how I haul my gear with me in the mornings. As we hit September and October, it's probably better weather for riding anyway, so hopefully I can get a good head of steam going and ride to work at least two or three days a week until it gets too cold.
