Kevin Drum also defends data mining, just not bad data mining. Here's my post on that from earlier this week.
Chris Anderson has been doing some fascinating, if somewhat dense, stuff with RIAA sales data. I think this dovetails with what I was saying in that post about the singles market with regard to the industry still getting preternaturally focused on hitting home runs instead of, say, base hits. You know, like singles.
