Godwinning The Argument

If Godwin's Law says a "debate" is officially over when Hitler or the Nazis show up, what then happens when Godwin's Law makes an appearance?
Aside from being the first time I've seen Godwin referenced in a major news source, I liked the treatment of the topic here -- along with Jon Stewart's take last week on The Daily Show, but it's still not the meta-analysis I'm looking for. I refuse to believe Durbin didn't know what he was getting into, unless he thought he was clever enough to invoke those comparisons in ways that couldn't be reduced to right-wing demagoguery. Which I guess might be a possibility.
