Okay, you know the whole wireless networking hell I've sorta been in? Not hell, so much, seeing as how it just disconnects overnight and all I have to do is reboot in the morning, but an inconvenience nonetheless.
I think I have it all wrong. I don't think it's a hardware/XP thing at all. Should know for sure tomorrow.
The key bit was that the problem was happening at the same time every night, and on Tuesday, I was finally home shortly before that time. More news later.
